Back at Editing

WIP Wednesday

Writing and Editing: Wrote the monthly short story and finished another short story with the working title of, Mood Bubbles. Resumed edits on the Rifters novels. Full speed ahead!

With a free schedule this month, I have a lot I want o accomplish. Besides working on edits and short stories, I want to start reading my stories and books into audio. New skills!

Although I’ve practiced reading in public and got comfortable with it, voice acting is new and something I’d like to get better at. And audio production is just a new trick I haven’t acquired yet.

I bought a nice mic several months ago, and my closet is sufficiently padded. I plan to start with my free short stories and produce audio only and audio plus video for these. Same for my permafrees, which I will read chapter by chapter. After all that practice, I figure I’ll be pretty comfortable with voice acting and audio production. So, it will be time to start reading the other novels, the ones I want to get paid for. Those will be audio only.

Non Author Life: So, it’s over… the day job. I’m officially unemployed. The off boarding was incredibly stupid. I’ve been at this job 5 years… 5 years!!! Plus, the 125 layoffs were split between 6 offices, we were to report at a time based on the letter our last names. So… there weren’t that many people.

Them: Your name?

Me (thinking): (You can’t be f’ing serious. I now get why they’re laying us off because they are really bad at their jobs. How do you not know our names?) Laughed and tossed them my badge.

Them: This is for IT. They try to hand it back. (Like reading my name was too much effort.)

My face must have read, “Don’t even…” Because she stopped and took my name off my badge. If you can’t make the effort to learn our names, I’m not making the effort to tell you.

Then it was done in less than 5 minutes. They didn’t want to talk to us, and they did their best not to make eye contact. It was the coldest ending I’ve ever had in my working life. This is a company that prides itself on community and doing humane things. Where was that corporate culture? It must have gotten laid off too.

I have worked in NYC and DC and for some large companies with thousands and hundreds of employees, and they have always known my name. And in every case (even when I didn’t want it) the company insisted on some sort of one-on-one contact before we parted ways. Anyway, it was just freaking bizarre.

I’m now free for a few weeks (before I start the job hunt) to be an author, to drum, and garden, and do whatever else I want. Naps!!
